JAKEDA was set up in the year 1989 under the administrative control of the department of science & technology,J&K; Govt. The objectives of JAKEDA as state nodal agency are the promotion and development of renewable energy programmers'/projects.
The mandate of the agency covers the entire gamut of renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, mini/micro Hydel, biomass and geothermal sources. The schemes implemented are largely sponsored by Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), government of India and include National program on bio- gas development, solar thermal, solar photo voltaic,mini/micro Hydel, Remote village electrification and biomass gasifiers .The Agency has a Central office headed by a chief executive officer (CEO) and 2 Regional offices in the Jammu and Kashmir UT.
